ATP Festival's Anika Tours The States, Has Scary Asbury Park Flashbacks

Anika, who played the Portishead-curated ATP "I'll Be Your Mirror" festival in Asbury Park, New Jersey on October 2 and also had a show at Brooklyn's Glasslands on October 6, is in the midst of her first North American tour,  supporting her 2010 debut album on Stones Throw. The gigs include a show with Zola Jesus in New Orleans on October 26

The one-time political journalist, née Annika Henderson, was fascinated — in a morbid way — by her first Asbury Park visit, telling The Alternate Side via email: "The setting was great. It was like a horror movie setting. A washed up beach resort town in the winter, full of grannies in visors and shell-suits. The hotel felt like the one from "The Shining," with seemingly endless symmetrical mirrored corridors, green 60s interior and the distant whisper of, "RedRum/MoreRum." Being just a few doors away from the Johnny Cash room added to the eeriness. Walking the corridors at night was equally entertaining. Blow-up dolls swaying in cowboy hats at door entrances, silent poker rooms, Bloody Marys for breakfast."

Bristol and Berlin-based Anika, whose debut was produced by Portishead's Geoff Barrow and Beak>'s Billy Fuller and Matt Williams,  is now touring with members of that band. The record is a slyly ragtag mix of dub-dipped originals and an abundance of covers, colored with a dark post-punk hue, including Bob Dylan's "Masters of War" and Yoko Ono's "Yang Yang." Despite her affection for many of the bands at the All Tomorrow's Parties festival, Anika admitted that she missed most of the groups that she wanted to catch. "I really wanted to see Pop Group, Manorexia and Silver Qluster, but missed all three because of things i had to take care of," said Anika, 20. "I did however, catch an excitable Public Enemy, the Horrors, a little Factory Floor, an incredible set from Portishead, a bit of the Oneida session and admired some of the art that was strewn around."
